Maubara

Maubara is a village in East Timor and is a subdistrict of the district of Liquiçá, just west of the city of Liquiçá. During the beginning of the Portuguese occupation, it was taken by the Netherlands. There is a historic Dutch fort, located at the entrance to the village on the seaside overlooking the bay. The fort still contains the original cannon and is quite well preserved.

Liquiçá

Liquiçá is a coastal city in East Timor, 32 km to the west of Dili, the national capital. Liquiçá is the capital of Liquiçá District. The city has a population of 19,000 inhabitants. On April 6, 1999, in the campaign of intimidation and violence that preceded the referendum for East Timorese independence, about 200 persons were killed in the Liquiçá Church Massacre, when members of the Besi Merah Putih militia, supported by Indonesian soldiers and police, attacked the church.

Buku Mera

Buku Mera is a village situated midways up a mountain range, in the East Timor Liquiçá district. The village is located to the south east of the Liquiçá township, halfway between Liquiçá and Bazartete. During September 1999, the village suffered numerous cases of rape and murder at the hands of the Besi Merah Putih militia.
