Dera (woreda)

Dera is one of the woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Debub Gondar Zone, Dera is bordered on the south by the Abbay River which separates it from the Mirab Gojjam Zone, on the west by Lake Tana, on the north by Fogera, on the northeast by Misraq Este, and on the east by Mirab Este. Towns in Dera include Amba Same, Arb Gebeya, Hamusit, and Qorata.

Tana Qirqos

Tana Qirqos is an island in the eastern part of Lake Tana in Ethiopia, near the mouth of the Gumara River, having a latitude and longitude of {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:11|51|49|N|37|29|27|E| |primary |name= }}. It is considered a holy island, and only monks of the Ethiopian Church live there. The monks believe that the island was once the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant.

Gumara River

Gumara River is a river of northern-western Ethiopia. It empties into Lake Tana at {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:11|53|N|37|31|E|region:ET_type:river|| |primary |name= }} from the east. Hot springs on the Gumara's banks at Wanzagay, which were popular in medicinal hot baths in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, are mentioned by the missionary Henry Stern. The river is an important spawning ground for native fish species, which include barbus, tilapia and catfish.

Awra Amba

Awra Amba is an Ethiopian community of about 400 people, located 73 kilometres east of Bahir Dar in the Fogera woreda of Debub Gondar Zone. It was founded in 1980 with the goal of solving socio-economic problems through helping one another in an environment of egalitarianism—in marked contrast to the traditional norms of Amhara society.
