By late summer 1944, the bulk of two German armies had become surrounded by the Allies near the town of Falaise. The Mont Ormel ridge, with its commanding view of the area, sat astride the Germans' only escape route.

Vimoutiers Tiger tank
The Vimoutiers Tiger tank (French: char Tigre de Vimoutiers) is a World War II German Tiger tank on outside display on the outskirts of Vimoutiers in the French departement of Orne, in Normandy. This tank was abandoned by its crew, after being sabotaged by two inside explosive charges, in August 1944, during the last fight of the Battle of Normandy. Abandoned until the mid-1970s in a road ditch, it was recovered by the municipality of Vimoutiers to prevent the tank being scrapped.
