Courrières mine disaster

The Courrières mine disaster, Europe's worst mining accident, caused the death of 1,099 miners (including many children) in Northern France on 10 March 1906. This disaster was surpassed only by the Benxihu Colliery accident in China on April 26, 1942, which killed 1,549 miners.

Gare de Lens

Lens railway station is a railway station in Lens, Pas-de-Calais, France. The building was built in 1926-1927 to resemble a steam locomotive with a 23 metre high tower as the chimney. The architect was Urbain Cassan. In December 1984 it was listed as a French National Heritage Site.

Zone rouge

The Zone rouge (French for "Red Zone") is the name given to about 1,200 square kilometres of land in northeastern France that was physically and environmentally destroyed during the First World War. Because of hundreds of thousands of human and animal corpses and millions of unexploded ordnance that contaminated the land, some activities in the area such as housing, farming or forestry, were temporarily or permanently forbidden after the war by French law.
