Arras Cathedral

Arras Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Vaast d'Arras) is the Roman Catholic cathedral of the city of Arras in France. It is the seat of the bishops of Arras. The original cathedral of Arras, constructed between 1030 and 1396, was one of the most beautiful Gothic structures in northern France, until it was destroyed in the French Revolution. The cathedral was the resting place of Louis de Bourbon, Légitimé de France, illegitimate son of Louis XIV and Louise de La Vallière.

Neuville-St Vaast German war cemetery

The Neuville-St Vaast German War Cemetery is located in Neuville-Saint-Vaast, a small village, near Arras, Pas-de-Calais, in northern France. The cemetery was established by the French in 1919 as a concentration cemetery for German war casualties from the regions north and east of Arras. It is now administered by the German War Graves Commission, (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge). It is the largest German cemetery in France, containing 44,833 burials.

Hawthorn Ridge Redoubt

Hawthorn Ridge Redoubt was a German front-line fortification west of the village of Beaumont Hamel on the Somme. It was the scene of a number of costly attacks by British infantry during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. It was also the site of one of the most famous pieces of film footage of World War I when the Hawthorn Ridge mine was detonated beneath the redoubt at 7:20 am on 1 July 1916, the first day on the Somme.
