Now the church of Saint Anne, the former cathedral was the seat of the bishop of Apt until the French Revolution. Under the Concordat of 1801 the diocese was divided between the Dioceses of Avignon and Digne.

The château lies approximately 3 kilometres to the northeast of the village of Gignac, and roughly 85 kilometres north of Marseille. Built in the 19th century as a hunting lodge, the dilapidated house and surrounding neglected estate was bought by David Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley in 1998, who is reported to have paid £500,000.
