Urbnisi

Urbnisi is a village in Georgia’s Shida Kartli region, in the district of Kareli. Situated on the Mtkvari river, it was an important city in ancient and early medieval Iberia as Georgia was known to the Greeks and Romans. Archaeological studies have demonstrated that the place was inhabited in the 3rd millennium BC. The settlement grew larger and, in the 4th century BC became a city with thriving commerce and culture.

1920 Gori earthquake

The Gori earthquake with the surface wave magnitude of 6.2 hit the town of Gori and its district, the Democratic Republic of Georgia, on February 20, 1920, inflicted heavy damage to the area and causing 114 deaths.

Variani

Variani is a village in the Gori District of Shida Kartli, about 12 kilometres from Gori. As of 2008, it had a population of 1,500. Variani is best known for being the birthplace of Iakob Gogebashvili and the location of the Iakob Gogebashvili House Museum, being a border village to the South Ossetia disputed territory, and being occupied by Russian forces in the 2008 South Ossetia war until 8 October 2008.
