German Continental Deep Drilling Program
The German Continental Deep Drilling Program (in German Kontinentales Tiefbohrprogramm der Bundesrepublik Deutschland), abbreviated as the KTB borehole, has been a scientific drilling project from 1987 to 1995 near Windischeschenbach, Bavaria. The main superdeep borehole has reached a depth of 9101 meter into the Earth's continental crust. The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research with 528 million Deutschmark (270 million Euro).

Upper Palatinate Tower
The Upper Palatinate Tower is an observation tower on the 946 metres high Platte mountain, the highest peak in the Steinwald and in Northern Upper Palatinate in southern Germany. The first solid observation tower was built in 1971/72 by the Steinwald Nature Park Authority from Steinwald spruce trees. Due to dilapidation it had to be demolished on 1 April 1998. The engineer, Ferdinand Lehner, from Tirschenreuth was then given the contract to design and build a new tower.
