Bornum am Elm

Bornum am Elm is a village of about 850 inhabitants in the city of Königslutter am Elm, Lower Saxony, Germany. It was a municipality until 1974, when it was joined to Königslutter. Bornum is situated near the northern edge of the Elm hills on the bank of the Scheppau stream, at an elevation of 135 meters. Neighboring places are Scheppau, Lauingen, and Abbenrode, as well as Königslutter proper. Industries include farming, tourism, and construction.

Cremlingen transmitter

The Cremlingen transmitter is a large mediumwave transmission facility established in 1962 for transmitting the program of Deutschlandfunk on 756 kHz near Cremlingen-Abbenrode. The first transmitter was installed in 1962. It transmitted the program of Deutschlandfunk on 756 kHz and used as its aerial a 137-metre-high guyed steel framework mast. In 1964/65 a second transmitter for the propagation of Deutschlandfunk on 548 kHz was installed.

Elm (hills)

The Elm is a range of hills north of the Harz mountains in the Helmstedt and Wolfenbüttel districts of Lower Saxony, Germany. It has a length of about 25 km (15.5 mi) and a width of 3–8 km (2–5 mi) and rises to an elevation of 323 meters. Surrounded by the Northern European Lowlands, the Elm is almost uninhabited and the largest beech forest in Northern Germany. The hills are of a triassic limestone called Elmkalkstein.

Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz

The Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (BfS) is the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection. The BfS was established in November 1989, the headquarter is located in Salzgitter, with branch offices in Berlin, Bonn, Freiburg, Gorleben, Oberschleißheim and Rendsburg. It has 708 employees (including 305 scientific) and an annual budget of around 305 million Euro (2009). Since 2009 the BfS is also responsible for the storage site of radioactive waste, Schacht Asse II.
