Battle of Jemmingen

After the Battle of Heiligerlee Louis of Nassau failed to capture the city Groningen. Louis was driven away by Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba and defeated at the Battle of Jemmingen (also known as Battle of Jemgum, at Jemgum in East Frisia) on 21 July 1568.

Sandwater

The Sandwater near Simonswolde in the north German district of Aurich is a shallow, peat-fen (Niedermoor) lake on the edge of the geest and is one of the few remaining, preserved, natural "inland seas" in East Frisia. The lake was formed probably during the warm climatic period of the Atlantic (period) about 5000 years ago, then disappeared temporarily after land uplifting and climate changes, only to reappear about 2000 years ago.

Harderwykenburg

The Harderwykenburg is one of the oldest extant castles of East Frisia. It was built in the style of a medieval stone house soon after 1450 in Leer, Lower Saxony, Germany. The original building, in the form of a tower, was built of stones from a monastery, and measures 8.09 x 11.13 meters. The external walls are between 0.96 and 1.23 meters thick. The tower was later supplemented by a two-storey extension. The steeply proportioned building has now been not entirely satisfactorily restored.

Jheringsfehn

Jheringsfehn (frequently misspelt Iheringsfehn) is a fen settlement in the municipality of Moormerland in the district of Leer in East Frisia near the North Sea coast of Germany. Its was named in 1754 after Sebastian Eberhard Jhering (1700-1759), great grandfather of Rudolf von Jhering. The village still has its classic fen canals. Important elements of village life are the local sports club and the Lutheran church, which also covers the neighbouring village of Boekzetelerfehn.
