Aquaworld Aquarium is a natural history museum in Hersonissos, Heraklion, Crete, Greece. Founded in 1995, Aquaworld was founded and developed by Scotsman John Bryce McLaren. The majority of the animals on display are either rescued or were unwanted pets which now have a home in this caring environment. Aquaworld encourages interest in the rescued creatures within their recreated natural habitat and is open daily from 1 April until 31 October each year.

It is an autonomous private foundation, established in July 1992, based on private collection owned by ophthalmologist Yiorgos Markakis. The Markakis and local workers were responsible for the building of the museum between 1986 and 1992. In March 1994, the Association of Members of the Museum was established, to obtain sponsorships and grants to operate the museum .

Robert Pashley found ruins close to a little port on the shore, and the actual names of the villages Hersonissos and Episcopianó, indicate that here is to be found what was once the ancient port of Lyctus, and afterwards became an episcopal city. The city minted coins in antiquity.

Skotino cave
The Skotino cave is one of the largest and more impressive caves among the many caves found in Crete. The cave lies high on a hill northwest of the village of Skotino, a few kilometers inland south of Gouves. It is also known as Agia Paraskevi cave from the church dedicated to Saint Paraskevi built on top of it. The cave is 160 meters deep and 36 meters wide.
