Vasilikades

Vasilikades (Greek: Βασιλικάδες, also Βασιλικιάδες - Vasilikiades) is a village in the Erisos region in north Kefalonia, a western Greek island. The village of Fiscardo is to the north 8 km away and to the south Assos is 10 km with Myrtos Beach a few more km south. Vasilikades is sometimes called Enosi locally which means 'union' in Greek and refers to the union of villages when one new village was built after the destruction of some smaller ones in the earthquake of 1953.

Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands are a group of islands in Greece. They are traditionally called the Heptanese, i.e. "the Seven Islands" (Greek: Ἑπτάνησα, Heptanēsa or Ἑπτάνησος, Heptanēsos; Italian: Eptaneso), but the group includes many smaller islands as well as the seven principal ones.

Septinsular Republic

The Septinsular Republic was an island republic that existed from 1800 to 1807 under nominal Ottoman sovereignty in the Ionian Islands. It was the first time Greeks had been granted even limited self-government since the fall of the last remnants of the Byzantine Empire to the Ottomans in the mid-15th century. Whilst a part of the First French Empire, the republic was known in French as République Septinsulaire or République des Sept-Îles.

1953 Ionian Earthquake

The Great 1953 Ionian Earthquake struck the southern Ionian Islands in Greece on August 12, 1953. In mid-August 1953, beginning on 8 August there were over 113 recorded earthquakes in the region between Kefalonia and Zakynthos, but the most destructive was the earthquake of August 12. That earthquake measured 7.2 on the Richter scale, raised up the whole island of Kefalonia by 60 cm, and caused widespread damage throughout the islands of Kefalonia and Zakynthos.
