Bolama
Bolama is the closest of the Bijagós Islands to the mainland of Guinea-Bissau, and is also the name of the island's main town, the capital of the Bolama Region. Population 10,014 (2008 est). It is almost surrounded by mangrove swamps and is known for its cashew nuts. Although often visited by local people, the island was apparently uninhabited when British colonists settled it in 1792.

2012 Guinea-Bissau coup d'état
On 12 April 2012, a coup d'état in Guinea-Bissau was staged by elements of the armed forces about two weeks before the second round of a presidential election between Carlos Gomes Júnior and Kumba Ialá. The coup started in the evening with military personnel and equipment making its way onto the streets, followed by the state-owned media taken off-air. Both second-round candidates and the incumbent president were initially arrested by the junta.

Bandim Health Project
The Bandim Health Project operates in one of the world’s poorest countries, Guinea-Bissau in West Africa. The core of the project is a demographic surveillance system which registers more than 90,000 people in 5 suburbs of the capital Bissau.
