Burma, Guyana

Burma is a rice-producing village on the Atlantic Ocean coast of Guyana, situated on the East Coast Demerara, 65 km east of Guyana. The village is well known because it houses the Burma Rice Development Station, the only one of its kind in Guyana, where new varieties are tested for desirable traits. Work has been carried out on the breeding of additional blast resistant varieties of 'rustic' type rice as well as aromatic and salt tolerant varieties.

Abary River

The Abary River is a small river in northern Guyana that drains into the Atlantic Ocean. Historic Amerindian settlements existed at Tiger Island, Taurakuli and Doctor Ho Landing. The largest Arawak settlement was Abary village in the upper Abary River, which unfortunately now lies under the reservoir created by the Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary (MMA) project in the 1970s.

Abary

Abary is a small community in the Mahaica-Berbice Region of Guyana, near the mouth of the Abary River, 43 miles from Georgetown. Abary is known for the Abary Bridge located on the Main Highway. The approach to the bridge can prove frightening to local children riding in cars.

Governor Light

Governor Light is a small community in the Mahaica-Berbice Region of Guyana. It stands on the coastal plain, at just one metre above sea-level, along the Mahaicony River, approximately 10 miles upstream from its mouth. Governor Light is named after Henry Light, the 3rd Governor of British Guiana.
