Nord-Ouest Department

Nord-Ouest (English: North-West, Haitian Creole: Nòdwès) is one of the ten departments of Haiti as well as the northernmost one. It has an area of 2,176 km² and a population of 445,080 (2003 Census). Its capital is Port-de-Paix. With the exception of Tortuga Island and the coastal area near Port-de-Paix, the northwest is mostly arid and barren. Port-de-Paix, which was once a large exporter of coffee and bananas, now imports goods and produce from Miami.

Port-de-Paix

Port-de-Paix (Pòdepè or Pòdpè in Kréyòl) is a city and the capital of the département of Nord-Ouest in Haïti on the Atlantic coast. It has a population of 250,000 (2009 census). Formerly a large exporter of bananas and coffee, Port-de-Paix is now a centre for smuggled goods from Miami, Florida, USA. The area around the town was given the name "Valparaíso" by Christopher Columbus after landing here on December 6, 1492, and still contains many attractive beaches and locations.

Port-de-Paix Airport

Port-de-Paix Airport is in passenger numbers, the third airport in Haiti and is located in the city with the same name, Port-de-Paix, on the north coast of Haiti. The airport does not have radar, nor is it a radio controlled aerodrome. The air traffic control center functions without these. The runway has recently been characterized as a gravel strip.

Fort de Rocher

Fort de Rocher (sometimes called Fort de la Roche or Dovecote) was a seventeenth-century fortress on the Caribbean island of Tortuga, "Ile de la Tortue" Northwest of Haiti. It was built and utilized by buccaneers as the primary defense of the island to prevent encroachment of Spanish forces. The fortress lies in ruin today, with only the foundations remaining.
