Montaña de Comayagua National Park

Montaña de Comayagua National Park is a national park in Honduras. It was established on 1 January 1987 and covers an area of 184.8 square kilometres. The park is know locally by the name Parque Nacional Montaña de Comayagua and the acronym PANACOMA. The park can be reached by heading north from Comayagua on the highway to La Esperanza. At the town of San Jeróniomo turn right onto a dirt road. The turn off is marked by a sign. Follow the signs for Río Negro and PANACOMA.

Comayagua is one of the 18 departments (departamentos) into which the Central American nation of Honduras is divided. The departmental capital is Comayagua. The department covers a total surface area of 5,196 km² and, in 2005, had an estimated population of 390,643 people.

Comayagua prison fire

The Comayagua prison fire was a deadly fire that occurred 14/15 February 2012 at the National Penitentiary in Comayagua, Honduras, killing 360 people. Among the dead were the spouses of inmates on conjugal visits. Prisoners trapped in their cells died by burning or suffocation; dozens were "burned beyond recognition". The fire in the prison started late in the evening of 14 February. According to one prisoner, calls for help went out almost immediately and "for a while, nobody listened.
