Barisan Mountains

The Bukit Barisan or the Barisan Mountains are a mountain range on the western side of Sumatra, Indonesia, covering nearly 1,700 km (1,050 mi) from the north to the south of the island. The Bukit Barisan range consists primarily of volcanoes shrouded in dense jungle cover, including Sumatran tropical pine forests on the higher slopes. The highest peak of the range is Mount Kerinci at 3,800 metres (12,467 ft).

List of volcanoes in Indonesia

The geography of Indonesia is dominated by volcanoes that are formed due to subduction zones between the Eurasian plate and the Indo-Australian plate. Some of the volcanoes are notable for their eruptions, for instance, Krakatau for its global effects in 1883, Lake Toba for its supervolcanic eruption estimated to have occurred 74,000 years before present which was responsible for six years of volcanic winter, and Mount Tambora for the most violent eruption in recorded history in 1815.

Polonia International Airport

Polonia International Airport (Indonesian: Bandar Udara Internasional Polonia) is an airport located in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, about 2 km from the downtown. It is the first international airport in Medan, the other being planned is Kuala Namu International Airport. It serves flights to several Indonesian and Malaysian cities, along with a flight to Singapore and Thailand.

Mandala Airlines Flight 091

Mandala Airlines Flight 091 was a scheduled domestic flight that originated from Polonia International Airport in Medan, Indonesia to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. On 5 September 2005, the flight crashed into a heavily-populated residential area seconds after taking off in Medan. There were 153 fatalities. Dozens of houses and cars were destroyed, and at least 49 people are reported to have perished on the ground.
