2005 Musayyib bombing

The 2005 Musayyib bombing was a suicide attack on a marketplace in Musayyib, Iraq, a town 35 miles south of Baghdad on July 16, 2005. The attacker had detonated his explosive belt in a crowded marketplace, where hundreds of people had come to shop and mingle after the day's stifling heat subsided.

Musayyib

Musayyib is a city in the Babil Province, Iraq. As of 2003, its population is 279,939. Musayyib sits on both the east and west banks of the Euphrates River, which splits into the Hindiya and Hilla branches just south of the city. Musayyib's municipal government has heavy representation from the Office of the Martyr Sadr, the political wing of Moqtada Sadr's Militia. There is a small minority representation by the Badr Corps as well.

Saddat al Hindiyah

Saddat al Hindiyah is a city on the Euphrates River in Iraq. It is located just south of Musayyib and 80 km south of Baghdad. In October 2003, the US Army initiated rehabilitation of roads and swamp areas in the Nasir neighborhood of Sadat al Hindiyah, to improve residents’ access to social and economic networks by draining swamps and paving major roads. http://www. usaid. gov/iraq/updates/jan04/iraq_fs15_012004. pdf Both the modern and old Hindiya Barrages are located near this town.

Hindiya Barrage

The Hindiya Barrage is located on the Euphrates south of the town of Musayyib in Babil Governorate, Iraq. It was designed by British civil engineer William Willcocks in response to the silting up of the Hillah branch of the Euphrates. Construction of the dam, with a length of over 250 metres, lasted between 1911 and 1913. Between 1984 and 1989, a new dam was built several kilometres upstream as a replacement for the Hindiya Barrage.
