Zawita

Zawita, is an Iraqi town of about 5,000 people the Dohuk Governorate. The name of the village is thought to come from Syriac ܙܘܝܬܐ meaning "corner". The village is inhabited mainly by Kurds and the second biggest group being the Assyrians. At one point it was home to majority Assyrians, prior to the Simele massacre. A number of Christian-owned businesses in the village were looted and burned downed during the 2011 Dohuk riots.

Sandur, Iraq

Sandur, also spelt Sundur, was a village located in Iraqi Kurdistan, about 70 miles north of Mosul, near Duhok, towards Amediyah. It was historically a Jewish agricultural settlement inhabited by Kurdish Jews.

Mangesh, Iraq

Mangesh is a town in the Iraqi Kurdistan region of Dohuk. The town lies in Barwari region and is populated by Assyrians. Several Assyrian leading figures were assassinated under unknown circumstances in the town.

Sarsing

Sarsing or Sarsink is an Assyrian village in the Iraqi providence of Dohuk. The name "Sarsing" derives from the Kurdish for "above (or) or upon chest". The name came from the location of the village, which is the highest altitude of a northern cliff of Gara Mountains. The climate of Sarsing is moderately hot in summer and cold in winter. Spring and fall are very short seasons but very pleasant especially the fall, which is the season of ripe fruits.

Badarash

Badarash is an Assyrian village in the Iraqi province of Dohuk. The village of Badarash is located 1.5 kilometres from the centre of Sarsink. The town name comes from Kurdish origin and means “The Black Air”. Badarash is named for its heavy cold winds and snowy winters. Most of the village’s houses are built from stone and mud and few from stone and cement and concrete ceilings. This village was never evacuated. Some residents moved to Duhok and Baghdad, but the majority stayed in Badarash.
