Athlone is the Capital of the Midlands Region and is "the commercial capital of the Irish Midlands" as described by IDA Ireland. Garrycastle is a Gaelic football club from the town of Athlone in County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland. The club was founded in 1981 after GAA fan's in the area saw the need for a second club in Athlone to cater for the growing population of the town. They won their first Westmeath senior football championship in 2001, and their first Leinster club football title in 2011 after a last minute free from second half substitute Conor Cosgrove. They are the first Westmeath club to win the title.

Portlick Castle
Portlick Castle is a medieval tower house castle near the 21st century village of Glasson, County Westmeath, Ireland some 6 miles from Athlone on the shores of Lough Ree. It comprises a square medieval 4-storey stone tower with an attached 2-storey Georgian wing and Victorian tower. It is the only medieval castle that has seen consistent use from the time of its occupancy in 1185 to the present day.

Athlone railway station of which there were two, serves the town of Athlone in County Roscommon and County Westmeath. It is located in the town on the east side of the river Shannon. The station is an interchange station between the Dublin-Galway and Dublin-Westport rail services. In addition it is located adjacent to the town's bus station. There are three platforms, of which Numbers 2 and 3 are an island platform.
