Cales

Cales was an ancient city of Campania, in today's comune of Calvi Risorta in southern Italy, belonging originally to the Aurunci/Ausoni, on the Via Latina. The Romans captured it in 335 BC and established a colony with Latin rights of 2,500 citizens. Cales was centre of the Roman dominion in Campania, and the seat of the quaestor for southern Italy even down to the days of Tacitus. It was an important base in the war against Hannibal, and at last refused further contributions for the war.

Pignataro Maggiore Airfield

Pignataro Maggiore Airfield is a grass airfield just north of Pignataro Maggiore, in the Province of Caserta in the Italian region of Campania, located about 40 km north of Naples. It is currently used for light private aircraft. It was an all-weather temporary field built by the United States Army Air Force XII Engineer Command using a graded earth compacted surface, with a prefabricated hessian (burlap) surfacing known as PHS.

Monte la Difensa

The battle for Monte La Difensa, which took place between 3 December and 9 December 1943, occurred during Operation Raincoat, part of the Battle for the Bernhardt Line during the Italian Campaign in World War II. Monte La Difensa, (also known as Hill 960) was one of the peaks forming the Camino hill mass which formed the left-hand "gatepost" dominating the Mignano Gap, key to the Allied Fifth Army's route to Cassino and the Liri valley and thence to Rome.

Samnium

Samnium is a Latin exonym for a region of south or south and central Italy in Roman times inhabited by the Samnites. The name survives in Italian today, but today's territory comprising it is only a small portion of what it once was. The populations of Samnium were called Samnites by the Romans. Their own endonyms were Safinim for the country (attested in one inscription and one coin legend) and Safineis for the people.
