1348 Friuli earthquake
The earthquake of 25 January 1348, centered in the South Alpine region of Friuli, was felt across Europe. The quake hit in the same year that the Great Plague ravaged Italy. Springing from a bare rockface on the eastern slope of the mountain Zadnja Ponca above the valley of Tamar in the Julian Alps, it is the first source of the river Sava Dolinka, the longer of the two sources of the Sava, the longest Slovene river at 221 kilometres and a tributary of the Danube.

St. Thomas's Church in Rateče, Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, is one of the oldest churches in the upper Sava Valley, confirmed by written documents and excavations as well as the church's original furnishings. The oldest written document mentioning Rateče is the Vidimus by the first Ljubljana Bishop Sigmund Lamberg, which is preserved today in the kapitelj archive of the Ljubljana archdiocesan archives.
