Torregrotta railway station

Torregrotta railway station is a railway station serving the small town of Torregrotta, in the north-east of Sicily, Italy. The station also serves nearby villages including Monforte San Giorgio, Roccavaldina and Valdina. It is located on the Palermo–Messina railway and all trains calling there are operated by Trenitalia. The current station, opened on 23 November 2009, replaces an earlier one dating from the early years of the twentieth century and closed on 9 August 2009.

Rometta Marea derailment

The Rometta Marea derailment occurred on Saturday July 20, 2002, in Rometta Marea, part of the Rometta comune in Sicily, Italy. The Espresso 1932 Freccia della Laguna, a Ferrovie dello Stato train coming from Palermo to Messina, where it would join another convoy coming from Siracusa, derailed while entering the town of Rometta Marea and hit an abandoned building, 400 metres from a pass-through railway station. Of the 190 passengers on board, 8 were killed and 47 were injured.

Milazzo Airfield

Milazzo Airfield is an abandoned World War II military airfield on Sicily, located in the southern suburbs of Milazzo, on the northern tip of the island. Built as a temporary wartime field by Army Engineers, using Pierced Steel Planking for runways and parking and dispersal areas, and support structures being quickly constructed out of wood or tents. The following units were stationed at the base taking part in the Allied invasion of Italy from the field.

Castello di Milazzo

The Castello di Milazzo is a fortified ensemble in Milazzo, Sicily, southern Italy. It is located on the summit of a hill overlooking the town, and is of uncertain origin, perhaps Arab. It was later enlarged in medieval and modern times, and it is now a National Monument of Italy.

Barcelona Landing Ground

Barcelona Landing Ground is an abandoned World War II military airfield in Sicily, located in the southwestern suburbs of Milazzo. It was a temporary field built by the Army Corps of Engineers used as part of the Invasion of Italy in August 1943. The airfield primarily used by the United States Army Air Force Twelfth Air Force 86th Bombardment Group from 27 August until 22 September.
