The Ghost and the Darkness
The Ghost and the Darkness is a 1996 historical adventure horror film starring Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer set in Africa at the end of the 19th century. It was directed by Stephen Hopkins and the screenplay was written by William Goldman. The film tells a fictionalised account about the two lions that attacked and killed workers at Tsavo, Kenya during the building of the African Uganda-Mombasa Railway in 1898.

Tsavo
Tsavo is a region of Kenya located at the crossing of the Uganda Railway over the Tsavo River, close to where it meets the Athi River. It is derived from a Maasai word sabuk (pronounced tsavok) which means river. The Maasai called the Tsavo river Engare sabuk meaning a big river. Until the British put an end to the slave trade in the 19th century, Tsavo was continually crossed by caravans of Arab slavers and their captives.

Tsavo River
The Tsavo River is located in Coast province in Kenya. It runs east from the western end of the Tsavo East National Park of Kenya, near the border of Tanzania, until it joins with the Athi River, forming the Galana River near the center of the park. This river is the main contributor to the watershed of the lower portion of the park region, and is home to abundant fish. The Tsavo River is the site of the 1898 Tsavo Maneaters incident.
