Cape Three Forks

Cape Three Forks is a headland on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco. The Arabic name (Ras Tleta Madari), the French name (Cap des Trois Fourches) and the Spanish name (Cabo de Tres Forcas), all signify the same thing: the Cape of the Three Forks. The cape is a large mountainous promontory of North Africa into the Mediterranean Sea. For centuries, this cape has provided both a nautical landmark and a maritime hazard for ships in the Alboran Sea.

Battle of Tres Forcas

The Battle of Tres Forcas was a battle on 7 August 1856 between boat crews from the Prussian Navy corvette SMS Danzig (then on a foreign cruise, commanded by Prince Adalbert of Prussia) and the Riffians, a Moroccan tribe of Berbers. It occurred at Cape Tres Forcas and was one of the first examples of Prussian or German gunboat diplomacy.

Melilla border fence

The Melilla border fence is a barrier between Morocco and the Spanish city of Melilla. Constructed by Spain, its stated purpose is to stop illegal immigration and smuggling. Morocco has objected to the construction of the barrier since it does not recognise Spanish sovereignty in Melilla

Siege of Melilla (1774)

The Siege of Melilla was an attempt by the British-backed Sultanate of Morocco to capture the Spanish fortress of Melilla on the Moroccan Mediterranean coast. Mohammed ben Abdallah, then Sultan of Morocco, invested Melilla in December 1774 with a large army of Royal Moroccan soldiers and Algerian mercenaries. The city was defended by a small garrison under Irish-born Governor Don Juan Sherlocke until the siege was lifted by a relief fleet in March 1775.
