Reiderland
Reiderland is a former municipality in the province Groningen in the northeastern Netherlands, which was founded in 1990 during a large municipal reorganization. The former municipalities Finsterwolde and Bad Nieuweschans were abolished and added to Beerta. In 1992, the new municipality was given its current name. In 2010 it joined in the municipality Oldambt.

Winschoten
Winschoten is a former municipality and city in the northeast of the Netherlands. Population (1 Jan 2003): 18.497; area: 22,24 km2. The origin of the name of Winschoten is not known but it has received nicknames. One of these is Molenstad (or Milltown). It has also been known, in living memory, as Sodom. This name arose out of the Jewish community who were scandalised by the immoral behaviour of their Gentile neighbours. The inhabitants are also called Tellerlikkers (plate lickers).

Beerta is a village in the municipality of Reiderland in the Netherlands. Until 1991, Beerta was a separate municipality. It merged with Finsterwolde and Nieuweschans. The new municipality was originally named "Beerta", but changed its name a year later to "Reiderland".

Heiligerlee
Heiligerlee is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen bordering the town of Winschoten, it is part of the municipality of Oldambt. The village is known for having been the site of the first battle of the Dutch rebels against the Spanish. The army led by Louis and Adolf of Nassau defeated the Spanish, but politically it was no success. Adolf even died during the fight.

Battle of Heiligerlee (1568)
Not to be confused with the earlier Battle of Heiligerlee (1536) The Battle of Heiligerlee was fought between Dutch rebels and the Spanish army of Friesland. This was the first Dutch victory during the Eighty Years' War. The Groningen province of the Spanish Netherlands was invaded by an army consisting of 3,900 infantry led by Louis of Nassau and 200 cavalry led by Adolf of Nassau. Both were brothers of William I of Orange.
