Battle of Sluys

The decisive naval Battle of Sluys, also called Battle of l'Ecluse, was fought on 24 June 1340 as one of the opening conflicts of the Hundred Years' War. It is historically important in that it resulted in the destruction of most of France's fleet, making a French invasion of England impossible, and ensuring that the remainder of the war would be fought mostly in France.

Sluis-Aardenburg

Sluis-Aardenburg was a municipality in the province of Zeeland, in the south-western part of the Netherlands. It was created from a merger of Sluis and Aardenburg in 1995, and it merged with the municipality of Oostburg, on 1 January 2003, to form the new municipality of Sluis. Sluis-Aardenburg covered an area of 83.48 km², of which 0.89 km² was water.

Aardenburg

Aardenburg is a small city close to the Dutch border with Belgium. It is part of the Sluis Municipality, located in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands. Its medieval name was Rodenburgh (Red Castle). In the Sint-Baafskerk,, Aardenburg houses the most complete example of the Scheldegotiek, the characteristic Gothic architecture of the Scheldt. It is also still possible today to see remains of some of the fortifications that used to enclose the city.

Heille

Heille is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located on the Belgium border, about 2 km west of Aardenburg in the municipality of Sluis. Heille was a separate municipality until 1880.

Sint Anna ter Muiden

Sint Anna ter Muiden is a town about 1 km west of Sluis, in the municipality of the same name. It is located on the westernmost point of the Netherlands, in the province of Zeeland. It has a population of 50 (as of 2001). Sint Anna ter Muiden was granted city rights in 1242 by the counts of Flanders, Thomas II of Savoy and Jeanne of Flanders. This makes it today the second smallest place in the Netherlands that bears this traditional designation (after Staverden with just 40 inhabitants).
