Battle of Sluis (1603)
The Battle of Sluis was a naval battle during the Eighty Years' War in which a Spanish squadron commanded by Federico Spinola tried to break through a blockade of Sluis by Dutch ships under the command of Joos de Moor. After about two hours of fighting the heavily damaged Spanish ships returned to Sluis. His commander, the Italian captain Federico Spinola, was killed during the action.

Battle of Damme
The Battle of Damme was fought on 30 May and 31 May 1213. The success of the English raids ended a threat of French invasion of England. Damme is located on the estuary of the Zwyn (now largely silted up), at that time in the county of Flanders (now in Belgium). It was then the port of the city of Bruges. The English knew King Philip II of France was planning to invade England, at the very least as a way of preventing an English attack on Poitou.

Retranchement is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located on the Belgian border, about 9 km northwest of Oostburg, in the municipality of Sluis. Cadzand
Cadzand is a town in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located in the municipality of Sluis, about 8 km northwest of Oostburg. The village contains 804 inhabitants (2007). Better known to many visitors is the nearby beach at Cadzand-Bad. Until 1 April 1970, Cadzand was a separate municipality. It then was annexed by the municipality of Oostburg. It was in January 2003, with the merger of Sluis-Aardenburg and Oostburg, that Cadzand found itself within the newly enlarged municipality of Sluis.
