Whitecliffs
Whitecliffs is a small town with a population of 117 in the Selwyn District of the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It has also been known as South Malvern (Sheffield was formerly known as Malvern), and the name of Whitecliffs comes from terrace cliffs above the Selwyn River. The town was once significantly larger and home to industrial activity such as pottery and brick-making, and coal and sand mining took place nearby.

Glentunnel
Glentunnel is a small village in the Selwyn District of the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It is officially recognised as a "populated area less than a town". The 2001 New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings gave Glentunnel's population as 129. It is located on State Highway 77 and was served by the Whitecliffs Branch, a branch line railway, from the line's opening on 3 November 1875 through to its closure on 31 March 1962.

Coalgate, New Zealand
Coalgate is a locality in the Selwyn District of the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. The 2001 New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings gave Coalgate's population as 276, and it is located roughly an hour west of Christchurch on State Highway 77. The town's name stems from it being the "gateway" to the lignite coal fields around Whitecliffs, the Rakaia Gorge, and Acheron River.

Waianiwaniwa River
The Waianiwaniwa River is a river in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. The source is in the foothills of the Southern Alps and it is a tributary of the Selwyn River. The Central Plains Water Trust is seeking approval to dam the river for a contentious irrigation scheme. The Central Plains Water Enhancement Scheme is opposed by environmental groups such as Fish and Game and Forest and Bird, and by the locally-based Malvern Hills Protection Society.
