Tolaga Bay
Tolaga Bay is both a bay and small town on the East Coast of New Zealand's North Island located 45 kilometres northeast of Gisborne and 30 kilometres south of Tokomaru Bay. It was named Tolaga Bay by Lt. James Cook, but the original Māori name is Uawa Nui A Ruamatua (shortened to Uawa), and some local residents now refer to the area as Hauiti, and themselves as Hauitians from the local iwi Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti.

Pourewa Island
Pourewa Island lies in Tolaga Bay, just offshore from Cook’s Cove in New Zealand. It was formerly known as Spöring Island, named by Lt. James Cook after the Finnish draughtsman Herman Spöring, a member of the scientific detachment aboard HM Bark Endeavour, and in 1990 a rock was taken from Pourewa Island to Spöring’s birthplace in Turku (Åbo), Finland, where it forms part of a monument which was erected there to commemorate the first Finn to land in New Zealand, in 1769.

Hikuwai River
The Hikuwai River is a river of the northeastern North Island of New Zealand. It flows south through a valley between two hill ridges to the north of Tolaga Bay, and for most of its length runs parallel with the Pacific coast (which lies five kilometres to the east). The river is a tributary of the Uawa River joining with it 10 kilometres before the Uawa flows into the sea at Tolaga Bay.
