The Kaeo River is a river of the far north of New Zealand's North Island. It flows through the north of the North Auckland Peninsula, reaching the sea at the Whangaroa Harbour. The small town of Kaeo sits on its banks, five kilometres from the river's mouth.

Whangaroa Harbour

Whangaroa Harbour, previously spelled Wangaroa Harbour, is an inlet on the northern coast of Northland, New Zealand. Whangaroa Bay and the Pacific Ocean are to the north. The small settlements of Totara North and Saies are on the west side of the harbour, Waitaruke on the south side, and Whangaroa on the east. State Highway 10 runs through Waitaruke. The name comes from the lament "Whaingaroa" or "what a long wait" of a woman whose warrior husband had left for a foray to the south.

Pupuke River

The Pupuke River is a river of the Northland Region of New Zealand's North Island. It flows northeast to reach the southern end of Whangaroa Harbour five kilometres northwest of Kaeo.

Stephenson Island (New Zealand)

off the northern coast of New Zealand in Whangaroa Bay lay a pair of small islands with the larger one named Stephenson Island. It is approximately 1.5 miles long and 0.5 miles wide, positioned with the major axis running northwest to southeast. The area is 112 hectares . Immediately to the northwest lies the smaller Cone Island. Satellite imagery indicates that the islands are forested and uninhabited. The Māori name for Stephenson Island is Mahinepua Island, which is rarely seen on maps.

Matauri Bay

Matauri Bay is a bay in New Zealand, situated 30 km north of Kerikeri, in Whangaroa county, just north of the Bay of Islands. It has over a kilometre of beautiful white sand and crystal clear water. It is particularly popular in the summer when thousands flock there to stay in the local camping ground which can be seen at the left hand end of the beach in the photo (right). Some of the first Polynesian navigators to New Zealand landed at Matauri Bay.
