Moutoa Island

Moutoa Island is an island of shingle approximately 500 metres long, eighty kilometres up the Whanganui River, New Zealand between the towns of Ranana and Hiruharama. Surrounded by rapids, it has been the site of many battles, the most famous being on the 14th May, 1864 between a force of Pai Marire followers from the upper Whanganui and the Ngati-Hau of the lower Whanganui during the Second Taranaki War.

Whanganui National Park

The Whanganui National Park is a national park located in the North Island of New Zealand. Established in 1986, it covers an area of 742 km² bordering the Whanganui River. It incorporates areas of Crown land, former state forest and a number of former reserves. The river itself is not part of the park.

Jerusalem, New Zealand

Jerusalem was once an important kainga on the Whanganui River in New Zealand where a Roman Catholic mission was first established in 1854. Known to Māori as Hiruharama, Jerusalem was the isolated site where, in 1892, Suzanne Aubert (better known as Mother Mary Joseph) established the congregation of the Sisters of Compassion. They became a highly respected charitable nursing/religious order.

Kakatahi

Kakatahi is a New Zealand town located 50 kilometres from Wanganui, on State Highway 4 to Raetihi. The once bustling roadworkers' camp is now closed and the introduction of private contractors has seen the community dwindle, with local families contributing to a school roll of only about a dozen in 2007.

Makotuku River
