San Carlos, Río San Juan
San Carlos is the capital city of the municipality of San Carlos and of the Río San Juan Department of Nicaragua. The city proper has a population of roughly 12,174, while the city and surrounding communities (Comarcas) contain 37,461 as of 2005. San Carlos is positioned on the confluence of Lake Nicaragua and the San Juan River. The Solentiname Islands in Lake Nicaragua are part of the Municipality of San Carlos.

Río San Juan Department
Río San Juan is a department in Nicaragua. It was formed in 1957 from parts of Chontales and Zelaya departments. It covers an area of 7,473 km² and has a population of 95,500 (2005 census). Trinidad, in Río San Juan, is the most southerly point in Nicaragua.

Solentiname Islands
The Solentiname Islands are an archipelago towards the southern end of Lake Nicaragua (also known as Lake Cocibolca) in the Nicaraguan department of Río San Juan. They are made up of four larger islands, each a few kilometres across, named, from west to east, Mancarroncito, Mancarrón, San Fernando and La Venada, along with some 32 smaller islands with rocky headlands which afford shelter to numerous aquatic birds. The islands’ origins are volcanic.
