The university is named after the first Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. The stadium has a capacity of 15,000 people. Abubarkar Tafawa Balewa Stadium is one of the 8 venues used for the FIFA U-17 Worldcup Nigeria 2009. The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria are due to meet their Argentine counterparts in their last group match on October 30, 2009 at the Abubarkar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi.
