Basmo Fortress

Basmo fortress is located in the north-western part of Marker municipality in Østfold near the Swedish border on an isolated mountain outcropping between Rødenessjøen and Hemnessjøen. It was constructed in the 1680s and was abandoned after 62 years of service in 1745. The first mention of this Norwegian fortress is in a letter from Field Marshal Wedel Jarlsberg to the King in 1683. Major General Johan Caspar von Cicignon developed the plans.

Ørje

Ørje is the administrative centre of Marker municipality, Norway, not far from the Swedish border. Its population (2008) is 1,763. Ørje is known for its canal museum and steamboat club. Engebret Soot made the first Norwegian canal locks at Ørje in about 1857-1860. The total lift of the locks are 10 meters (30 feet) divided on 3 steps. The locks are situated between the lakes "Rødenessjøen" and "Øymarksjøen" as a part of the Halden Waterway System.

Ørje Fortress

Ørje Fortress lies in Marker municipality in Østfold county, Norway. The fortification was built in 1902 and 1903 to guard the heavily trafficked route through Ørje, which was an important entry point from Sweden. The fortifications consist of two parts: the northern fort and southern fort. The northern fort lay southwest from Ørje bridge and sluice: the southern fort was at Likollen, 1 km further south. Both were positioned on elevated positions and were armed with four canons.

Halden Canal

The Halden Canal near Halden, Norway begun construction in 1852. The canal allows boats to travel parallel to the Swedish border of 75 km from Tistedal to Skulerud. Engebret Soot (1786 - 1859) was responsible for this canal, as well as the earlier Soot Canal.
