Located just east of the village Tveitsund, it is a part of the urban area of the same name, which has a population of 361 as of 1 January 2009. The village is the sole centre of population greater than 200 in the Nissedal municipality. The Old Norse name for Treungen was «Þriðjungrinn», meaning "a third part" and probably refers to an old division of the village.
