The church is part of the Trondenes parish in the Trondenes deanery in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The chapel is sometimes known as Hans Egedes minne, referring to the famous missionary to Greenland from this part of Harstad in the 1600s. Grytøya is an island located just north of the large island of Hinnøya and south of the island of Bjarkøya in northern Norway. It belongs to the municipality of Harstad in Troms county. It is surrounded by the Vågsfjorden in the east and the Andfjorden in the west. The island has an area of 108 square kilometres and the highest peak is the 1,012-metre tall mountain Nona. The population of Grytøya (2001) is 539.

Bjarkøy Church is a parish church in the municipality of Harstad in Troms county, Norway. It is located in the village of Nergården on the island of Bjarkøya. The church is part of the Bjarkøy og Sandsøy parish in the Trondenes deanery in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The white wooden church was originally built in 1766 on the island of Sandsøya. In 1866, the church was disassembled and moved to Nergården on the island of Bjarkøya. The church seats about 350 people.

It was the main island of the former municipality of Bjarkøy, with the old administrative centre of Bjarkøy, Nergården, located on the island. Bjarkøy and Harstad merged together on 1 January 2013. The island is located north of Grytøya and northwest of Sandsøya, with the Andfjorden to the northwest and the Vågsfjorden to the southeast. The main church for the island is Bjarkøy Church in Nergården.
