Battle of Prokhorovka

The Battle of Prokhorovka (12 July 1943) was fought on the Eastern Front during the Second World War as part of the Battle of Kursk in the Soviet Union (450 kilometers / 280 miles south of Moscow). Principally, the German Wehrmacht's Fourth Panzer Army clashed with the Soviet Red Army's 5th Guards Tank Army. It is the largest tank battle in military history. On 5 July 1943 the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht launched Operation Citadel.

Prokhorovka is an urban locality and the administrative center of Prokhorovsky District of Belgorod Oblast, Russia, located along the Psyol River southwest of the city of Kursk. Population: 9,761; 10,007; 8,093. Prokhorovka was the site of the Battle of Prokhorovka, a major armored confrontation during the Battle of Kursk of World War II.

Prokhorovsky District is an administrative district, one of the twenty-one in Belgorod Oblast, Russia. Municipally, it is incorporated as Prokhorovsky Municipal District. It is located in the north of the oblast. The area of the district is 1,378.7 square kilometers . Its administrative center is the urban locality of Prokhorovka. Population: 30,094; 31,847; 29,505. The population of Prokhorovka accounts for 32.4% of the district's total population.

Seversky Donets River

Seversky Donets (Russian: Северский Донец; Ukrainian: Сіверський Донець; alternatively Donetz) is a river on the south of the East European Plain. It originates in the Central Russian Upland, north of Belgorod, flows south-east through Ukraine and then again through Russia to join the Don River, about 100 km from the Sea of Azov. Seversky Donets is the fourth largest river in Ukraine and is an important source of fresh water in the east of the country.
