Vella Lavella

Vella Lavella is an island in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands. It lies to the west of New Georgia, but is considered one of the New Georgia Group. To its west is the Treasury Islands. The sea around the island was the site of the Naval Battle of Vella Lavella in World War II. The Land Battle of Vella Lavella took place from 15 August to 9 October 1943. During World War II, Vella Lavella was the home base for VMF-214 (the "Black Sheep," led by Gregory Boyington).

Japanese destroyer Kawakaze

Japanese destroyer Kawakaze was the ninth of ten Shiratsuyu-class destroyers, and the third to be built for the Imperial Japanese Navy under the Circle Two Program (Maru Ni Keikaku).

Japanese destroyer Arashi

Arashi was a Kagero-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Arashi played a vital role in World War II by inadvertently guiding US attack planes to the Japanese carrier fleet at the Battle of Midway. Arashi had become separated from the Japanese carrier force while attempting to destroy an American submarine, the USS Nautilus. Following her attacks on the Nautilus the Arashi steamed at high speed to rejoin the group.

Japanese destroyer Hagikaze

Hagikaze was a Kagero-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Participating at the Battle of Midway, the heavily damaged Kaga was scuttled by her two torpedoes, Kaga being fatally damaged by US aircraft of USS Enterprise (CV-6) during the battle. On 7 August 1943, Hagikaze was sunk between Kolombangara and Vella Lavella during the Battle of Vella Gulf, by torpedoes and gunfire from the US destroyers USS Dunlap (DD-384), USS Craven (DD-382), and USS Maury (DD-401), with 178 killed.
