Mundal Lagoon

Mundal Lagoon is a lagoon in Puttalam District, western Sri Lanka. The lagoon is sometimes referred to as Mundal Lake. The lagoon is linked to Puttalam Lagoon to the north by a channel. The lagoon's water is brackish. The lagoon is surrounded by a region containing rice paddies, coconut plantations and scrubland. The land is used for prawn fishing and rice cultivation. The lagoon has mangrove swamps, salt marshes and sea grasses.

North Western Province, Sri Lanka

North Western Province (Sinhala: වයඹ පළාත Wayamba Palata, Tamil: வட மேல் மாகாணம் Wada Mael Maakaanam) is a province of Sri Lanka. The districts of Kurunegala and Puttalam formulate Wayamba. Its capital is Kurunegala, which has a population of 28,571. The province is known mainly for its numerous coconut plantations. Other main towns in this province are Chilaw (24,712) and Puttalam (45,661), which are both small fishing towns.

Sellankandal

Sellankandal is a village situated 10 km inland from coastal Puttalam city in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka. It is the primary settlement of people of Black African descent in Sri Lanka called Kaffirs who until the 1930s spoke a Creole version of Portuguese. Most villages speak Sinhala and are found throughout the country as well as in the Middle East. The Baila type of music, very popular in Sri Lanka since the 1980s, originated centuries ago among this 'kaffir' community.
