Polgahawela is a town in north western Sri Lanka. The town is most notable for being a major railway junction. Polgahawela is a small town that belongs to the North Western Province of Sri Lanka, and situated at a distance of 80 km north-east from the capital city of Colombo; 50 km from Kandy; 20 km from Kurunegala; and 65 km from Bandaranayake International Airport. Pinnawalla is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2011, there were 88 elephants, including 37 males and 51 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala.
