The municipality was formed in 1967 when the municipalities of Bredestad and Hullaryd, both created in 1952 were amalgamated. Göta ingenjörregemente
Göta ingenjörregemente (Götaland Engineer Regiment), designation Ing 2, is a Swedish Army engineer regiment that traces its origins back to the 19th century. It is still in active service, and is currently garrisoned in Eksjö. In spring 2008 the Swedish government announced that the Göta Ingenjörsregemente is threaten by closure in efforts to saving money at the Swedish defence. Decision is made in September 2008.
