Meknassy

Meknassy, sometimes spelt Maknassy, is a town and commune in the Sidi Bou Zid Governorate, Tunisia. As of 2004 it had a population of 13,742. It is in the governorate of Sidi Bouzid, 120 kilometers west of Sfax, and is a small administrative center (capital of delegation) and a marketing center for agricultural produce from the surrounding area, including fruit. Its population is explained by the settling of Berber tribes (Confederation of Hammama) that nomadic steppe in the region.

Battle of Sidi Bou Zid

The Battle of Sidi Bou Zid was a World War II battle that took place during the Tunisia Campaign. The battle was fought between forces of Nazi Germany and forces of the United States. The German forces included the 10th Panzer Division and the 21st Panzer Division of the Fifth Panzer Army commanded by Colonel General Hans-Jürgen von Arnim. The American forces included elements of the II Corps commanded by Major General Lloyd Fredendall.
