The station was famous for being located next to the only level crossing in Turkey. The Oriental Railway Company's Alsancak-Aydın Main Line crossed with the Smyrna Cassaba Railway's Basmane-Afyon Main Line. Due to the layout of the tracks, the station was first named Istravoz railway station in 1866.

İzmir Adnan Menderes International Airport is an airport serving İzmir and is named after former Turkish prime minister Adnan Menderes. It is located in the Gaziemir area of İzmir. İzmir's main airport is located 18 km southwest of the city on the way to Selçuk, Ephesus and Pamukkale. The easiest way to get there from İzmir is by İZBAN commuter rail service or the Havaş airport shuttle bus (every 20 minutes, 35 to 60 minutes) from the Turkish Airlines office.
