Battle of Harpsdale

The Battle of Harpsdale (Battle of Achardale, Battle of Harpasdal) was a Scottish clan battle fought in 1426 at Achardale, about 8 miles south of Thurso. The Clan Mackay had invaded Caithness from the west and Harpsdale was where the local clans of Gunn and Keith chose to make a stand. Despite great slaughter on both sides, the battle appears to have been inconclusive.

Olrig

Olrig is a parish in Caithness, Scotland and the main settlement in the parish is Castletown. Prior to 19th century agricultural improvements the parish was sub-divided into ten townlands or 'fermlands'. Boundaries were mostly disregarded and lost during the 19th century but many townland names remain identifiable in farmstead names ending with Mains.

Tormsdale

Tormsdale is a megalithic site on the banks of the River Thurso, in Caithness, Scotland. It is 3 km south of Westerdale. The site consist of some low stone rows which are difficult to trace as the stones are small and have been partly overgrown by grass. Tormsdale is near to another stone row at Dirlot, and is also close to the brochs at Tulach Beag and Tulach Mor.

Wolf Burn

The Wolf Burn is a small stream, running from a suspect subterreanean source behind the Ormlie housing estate in Thurso, Highland Region in the United Kingdom. Its issue is by Burnside, Caithness. A ribble of stones represents the Wolf Burn Distillery which operated for a number of decades around the mid 19th Century.
