Nine Mile Burn is the last hamlet in Midlothian, Scotland when heading south on the A702 road. It is located next to the Pentland Hills, about 2 km north-east of the village of Carlops.

Scald Law, the highest of the Pentland Hills, is a hill 1.5 km north-west of Penicuik, Scotland. The hill is composed of Devonian volcanic rock. The origin of the name is uncertain. Some sources say it derives from the Scots Language word scawed, meaning bare, while another claims it derives from scaldberry, an old name for blackberry.

Bavelaw Castle
Bavelaw Castle is a historic house in the City of Edinburgh council area, Scotland. It is north of Hare Hill in the Pentland Hills, four miles west of Penicuik, and two miles south of Balerno, above Threipmuir Reservoir. The house was built around a 16th century L-plan tower house. Mary, Queen of Scots, and James VI both stayed at Bavelaw. An earlier structure was held by the Braids, then by the Fairlies, but passed to the Forresters of Niddry by marriage.

The name is curious, as it is the Lyne Water which is dammed to form the reservoir, not the Baddinsgill Burn, which joins the Lyne Water further south, below the reservoir.
