Oxton, Scottish Borders

Oxton is a rural village in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, just off the A68. The royal burgh of Lauder is 4.5 miles to the south of the village. Oxton is an ideal base from which to explore Edinburgh, Midlothian, East Lothian and the Scottish Borders. We are 25 miles south east of the centre of Edinburgh, yet in a quiet rural position in which to fully appreciate the beauty of the Scottish Borders.

Lauderdale

Lauderdale is a long narrow geographical district in the Scottish Borders, Scotland, being the valley of the Leader Water,, above which rivulet St. Cuthbert had a vision of St. Aidan's soul being conducted to heaven. It is traversed from end to end by the A68 trunk road which terminates at Edinburgh.

Thirlestane Castle

Thirlestane Castle is a castle set in extensive parklands near Lauder in the Borders of Scotland. The site is aptly named Castle Hill, as it stands upon raised ground. However, the raised land is within Lauderdale, the valley of the Leader Water. The land has been in the ownership of the Maitland family since 1587, and Thirlestane served as the seat of the Earls of Lauderdale. The castle was substantially extended in the 1670s by the first and only Duke of Lauderdale.

Soutra Aisle

Soutra Aisle, just within the Scottish Borders, not far from Fala, is the remains of the House of the Holy Trinity, a church that was part of a complex comprising a hospital and a friary. It lies half a mile along the B6368 from its junction with the A68.

Lammermuir Hills

The Lammermuir Hills, usually simply called the Lammermuirs (An Lomair Mòr in Gaelic), in southern Scotland, form a natural boundary between Lothian and the Scottish Borders. Sir Walter Scott's historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor is set in the area, as is Gaetano Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor which is itself based on Scott's novel. The Lammermuir Hills span the areas of East Lothian Council and the Scottish Borders Council, and they extend from Gala Water to St.
