Interesting facts about this location

Pluto's Cave

Pluto's Cave is a partially collapsed lava tube on the northern outskirts of Mount Shasta. The lava tube is roughly 190,000 years old which is pretty old for a lava tube since they normally collapse rather soon with their ceilings being only a few meters thick. However Pluto's Cave is located in a semi-arid climate where erosion is restricted which would account for its long age. In 1863, Nelson Cash discovered the lava tube and named it Pluto's Cave after the Roman God of the underworld.

Meiss Lake

Meiss Lake is a 3,000-acre, shallow, warm lake located in the western portion of Butte Valley, in eastern Siskiyou County. The lake is a remnant of a larger lake that occupied the entire valley when temperatures were cooler and is fed seasonally by several creeks in Butte Valley. Although Meiss Lake is in the closed Butte Creek Valley basin, in wetter times it undoubtedly flowed over a low divide into Rock Creek and then into the Klamath River east of Copco Lake.
