Mussel Slough Tragedy

The Mussel Slough Tragedy was a dispute over land titles between settlers and the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) that took place on May 11, 1880, on a farm located 5.6 miles northwest of Hanford, California, in the central San Joaquin Valley, leaving seven people dead. Frank Norris' 1901 novel, The Octopus: A Story of California, was inspired by this incident, as was W. C. Morrow's 1882 novel Blood-Money.

Lillis, California

Lillis (formerly, Sans Tache) is a former settlement in Fresno County, California. It was located on the railroad 2 miles west of Laton, at an elevation of 253 feet (77 m). Lillis still appeared on maps as of 1927. The name honors Simon C. Lillis, ranch superintendent. A post office operated at Lillis from 1890, to 1900 when the service transferred to Laton.
