Tassajara Zen Mountain Center

The Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in the Ventana Wilderness area of the Los Padres National Forest, southeast of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, is the oldest Japanese Buddhist Sōtō Zen monastery in the United States. The Center is very isolated, more than 16 miles from the nearest paved road, and only accessible via a narrow, steep, one-lane dirt road. During the winter months, practitioners live on site. During the summer months, the Center is opened to day and overnight guests.

China Camp (Los Padres National Forest)

China Camp is a public drive-in campground on Chews Ridge in the Monterey District of the Los Padres National Forest. Located on the dirt road, Forest Route 18S02/Tassajara Road, it serves as the eastern trail head of the Pine Ridge Trail and is 10.9 miles from Carmel Valley Road. The summit is 19.9 miles from Carmel Valley Village. The Chews Ridge forest fire lookout, built in 1984, is nearby.

Carmel River

The Carmel River is a 36 mi river on the Central Coast of California in Monterey County that originates in the Santa Lucia Mountains. The river flows northwest through the Carmel Valley with its mouth at the Pacific Ocean south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, at Carmel Bay. It is often considered the northern boundary of Big Sur. The Carmel River drains a watershed of about 255 square miles (660 km²).

Jamesburg Earth Station

The Jamesburg Earth Station is located in the rural Cachagua area of Carmel Valley, California, about 26 miles southeast of Monterey. It was originally built in 1968 to support the Apollo 11 moon landing. The 10-story high, 30 metres dish, driven by a Vertex-RSI 7210 drive system, served for about 35 years as the West Coast Teleport of AT&T/COMSAT's communications Satellite Network, and was the earth station serving Intelsat satellites parked in geosynchronous orbit over the Pacific Ocean.
